2006-03-05 support

this morning my parents and i went to a local synagogue to hear politicians (of faith) hold a forum on a proposed bill to the MN constitution that would not only ban gay marriage, but knock out the already existing legislation that allows for domestic partnership benefits and pther same sex family protections. the good news is that the representatives that spoke (from the house and senate) were all optimistic that this legislation could and will be defeated if it ever reaches a vote. the bad news is that this legislation is even being discussed. and since a similar bill passed very recently in our neighboring states (wisconsin and south dakota) there is a real reason to be concerned. this forum was also interesting because every organization i ever had any dealings with in MN was there in support of opposing the legislation. plus all of my parent's friends were there. also, a local and recently appointed senator for one of the nearby burbs had a great story of getting elected in a special election in a tight race with another woman, both who are fiscally conservative. but the woman at the forum miraculously won (she thinks the vote split on the issue of separation of church and state -- she being in favor of such a separation) and it turns out that she has a gay brother and her family is long time members of a local Jewish synagogue. now, this appointment is really just one appointment, but in the grand scheme of things it put one more very very important vote in the hands of the "right" side, and is one of the reasons i'm not all that concerned with the proposed legislation. however, that didn't stop me from grabbing about a hundred mailers that i will distribute to everyone and anyone i know that votes in MN. if only i knew more people in more rural MN, because that is where we are going to need to draw more support.
